Mature trees and quieter residential streets create a setting that feels removed from the city’s denser areas, while Germantown Avenue and SEPTA’s Regional Rail lines keep everyday conveniences and Center City within reach.

Chestnut Hill’s architecture reflects more than two centuries of development, with historic homes and distinctive properties throughout the neighborhood. Stone houses are especially characteristic of the area, alongside Victorian-era homes, twins, rowhomes, and larger properties.

The neighborhood’s architecture is part of what gives Chestnut Hill its character. Many of the older homes feature distinctive craftsmanship and details that reflect the period in which they were built, while established landscaping adds to the setting. Much of the neighborhood is also included in the Chestnut Hill Historic District.

That local feel extends beyond the commercial district. Woodmere Art Museum gives residents a place to return to for exhibitions and events, while community traditions throughout the year bring neighbors together and keep the neighborhood active.

Accessibility

Chestnut Hill is well connected to the rest of Philadelphia by both car and public transportation. The Chestnut Hill East and Chestnut Hill West Regional Rail lines provide direct service toward Center City, while SEPTA bus routes 23, 77, 94, 134, and L serve the neighborhood. The Chestnut Hill West station is also just off Germantown Avenue, making it particularly convenient for residents near the commercial district.

For drivers, I-76 and Route 309 provide connections to Center City and the surrounding suburbs, with Germantown Avenue running directly through the neighborhood. The Chestnut Hill Business District also offers public parking lots along Germantown Avenue for visitors and shoppers.
